Ample is now live in Madrid. After announcing our partnership with Stellantis and Free2move, we’re excited to share that stations were deployed in Madrid, vehicles are on the road, and swapping has begun. This isn’t a future vision—it’s happening now.
With support from the Spanish government, we’ve deployed the first of many planned battery swapping stations and rolled out the first 40 swappable Fiat 500e vehicles across the city. We’ll continue the rollout to reach 100 vehicles, laying the foundation for what scalable urban electrification should look like.
Making EVs Work for Car-Sharing
For car-sharing fleets, time off the road is time lost. That’s why long plug-in charging sessions have held back EV adoption. With Ample, a full charge takes just 5 minutes—no waiting, no idle vehicles. The process is simple: drivers pull in, press “Go” in the mobile app, and get back to work. It’s what they’re used to doing with gas.
We’re helping Free2move scale its EV fleet while keeping cars readily available for customers who rely on quick, on-demand access. With battery swapping, vehicle availability stays high, even in a shared, distributed model like Free2move’s, and the infrastructure can scale quickly as more EVs are ready to hit the road.
Because our platform is modular, the same station that swaps a Fiat 500e today can support other models that we’re bringing to market tomorrow. This allows us to support a multitude of use cases on the same built infrastructure.
Backed by Spain’s Moves Singulares Grant
We’re proud to be the first recipient of a €9.76 million grant from Spain’s *Moves Singulares* program, which supports technologies that accelerate the EV transition. Battery swapping offers a uniquely compact and scalable answer to the challenges of charging in dense urban environments.
Madrid leads the country in EV adoption and is actively investing in the infrastructure needed to meet Spain’s goal of 5.5 million EVs by 2030. Ample’s partnership is helping turn that ambition into real, working solutions on the ground.
The Rollout Has Begun
We’re happy we’re done testing and excited for this city-wide launch.
Together with Stellantis, Free2move, and Free2move Charge, we’re proving that battery swapping is ready for everyday use. Madrid is the starting line—and what we build here will shape what comes next.
Another city energized. Many more to go. Let’s keep building.
